Chapter 15

“Allie, could you please come here and show me what to do?”

Allie withheld a sigh and moved to show Taylah how to access the computer file. Again. Was it unreasonable to expect Taylah to know what to do by now? Taylah, whose internship had somehow turned into a permanent, part-time position. How that had happened Allie did not know. Maybe an email or staff discussion had slipped by while she’d been so distracted by Jai.

Jai. Her chest knew a fluttery sensation. How wonderful was he? Another bouquet of flowers had arrived today with a simple note—not in his handwriting, she’d noticed—that said: Miss you. J.

When the flowers arrived this morning, she’d thanked God that Myra was in a meeting, as the other women’s eyes had all rounded before they turned to her.

“Oh my gosh! How lovely!” Taylah had said like the college student she was.

“From your boyfriend?” Selina asked.

Allie had hesitated before finally admitting, “Yes.”

“Oh my gosh!”

“Who is he?” Selina’s eyes widened, then narrowed slightly.

“Just…someone.”

“Is he famous?” Taylah asked.

Compared to a Kardashian or the Queen? “No.”

Her fellow staff members both wore puzzled brows. “Then what’s his name?” Selina asked at the same time Taylah said, “Where’d you meet?”

Avoiding the first question, and figuring the second was easier to hedge around, she said, “Ch-church.” Well, that was where they’d properly gotten to know each other anyway.

As per any mention of church, this answer was met with dismay and disappointment, although Taylah asked if they could meet him. Allie had managed a creditable and incredulous-sounding “Whatever for?” for which Taylah had no answer, and soon the interest had died down, and they’d completed their shifts without further excitement. Until Taylah’s computer had “malfunctioned” as she called it—driver incompetence, Allie privately thought—for the third time in as many days.

The phone rang, and Allie answered. “Hello, Public Relations and Learning, this is Allie.”

“Ah, Ms. Davis. This is Meaghan Baldrick. Mr. Weinberger would like you to call in as soon as is convenient.”

“Today?”

“Yes, today.”

Allie glanced at the roster, knew if she left now she’d be free. “I can be there in five minutes.”

“Perfect. I’ll let him know.”

Allie collected the folder that contained the material she’d been working on and rose.

“Where are you off to?” Selina asked.

“I have to speak to Meaghan about something.” Admitting she was seeing Meaghan was easier than going through the potential ramifications of having to explain why she was going to see Mr. Weinberger.

“But what shall I tell Myra when she returns?” she asked.

Beau’s comment from the other day flashed to mind. Trying new things is the spice of life. New things: like being assertive. “You can tell her what I t-told you.”

Ten minutes later she was sitting in Mr. Weinberger’s office, listening as he outlined his plan. He’d talked about building connections in the community and beyond, and she’d come prepared with a list of various businesses and organizations to hand to him. He seemed impressed, eyebrows raised, nodding as he read through the sheet.

“I’m pleased to see you’ve taken initiative with some of these,” he said, tapping the paper.
